Seasonal Photoacclimation in the North Pacific Transition Zone

چکیده
The Transition Zone Chlorophyll Front (TZCF) is a dynamic region of elevated chlorophyll concentrations in the Northeast Pacific that migrates from southern winter (February) extent approximately 30°N to northern summer (August) 40°N. transition zone has been highlighted as important habitat for marine animals and fisheries. We re-examine physical biological drivers seasonal TZCF variability using variety remote sensing, reanalysis, situ data sets. Satellite-based sensing estimates carbon show migration primarily reflects increase ratio, rather than changes phytoplankton carbon. use our compilation demonstrate how seasonality light nutrient fluxes decouple at latitudes. Seasonal mixed-layer-averaged availability positively correlated with negatively through zone, while climatological nitrate profiles ratios are facilitated by wintertime entrainment. These empirical results consistent physiological models describing low light, nutrient-replete environments, demonstrating importance latitudinal structure interpreting dynamics basin scale.

An East-West Comparison of the Transition Zone Coastal Pelagic Nekton of the North Pacific Ocean
During the 1980s and 1990s, scientific research cruises were conducted in both the eastern and western boundary regions of the North Pacific Ocean. The main purpose of these cruises was to examine the abundance and distribution patterns of juvenile salmon in coastal waters. These studies created one of the most extensive databases ever collected on the species composition of coastal Transition ...
متن کاملMicrobial Biomass In the Euphotic Zone of the North Pacific Subarctic Water
Microbiological investigations were made in the No rth Pacific subarctic water during spring of 1969. Total bacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, yeasts, and glucose uptake by microorganisms were measured in the euphotic zone. There was no heterogeneity in the distribution of microbial biomasses between Alaskan Gyre, mid-Pacific transitional water, and Western Gyre. Another statistical analysis sho...
متن کاملParticle distributions and dynamics in the euphotic zone of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
During the summer of 2012, we used laser diffractometry to investigate the temporal and vertical variability of the particle size spectrum (1.25–100 mm in equivalent diameter) in the euphotic zone of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Particles measured with this optical method accounted for;40% of the particulate carbon stocks (<202 mm) in the upper euphotic zone (25–75 m), as estimated using...
متن کاملOn the absence of an ultralow‐velocity zone in the North Pacific
[1] Using an unusually large earthquake near the big island of Hawaii, we study the core mantle boundary (CMB) beneath the north‐northeastern Pacific between Hawaii and North America. A dense sampling of the CMB is achieved using the core‐reflected phase PcP recorded at a large number of high‐quality stations in North America, including networks in California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, as...
متن کاملSynchronous Seasonal Change in Fin Whale Song in the North Pacific
Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) song consists of down-swept pulses arranged into stereotypic sequences that can be characterized according to the interval between successive pulses. As in blue (B. musculus) and humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), these song sequences may be geographically distinct and may correlate with population boundaries in some regions. We measured inter-pulse inte...
